HOme > Raising the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)
Effective 1 July 2024, the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) will be raised from $70,000 to $73,150. All new nomination applications from this date onward must meet the new TSMIT of $73,150 or the annual market salary rate (AMSR), whichever is higher. Importantly, this change will not impact existing visa holders or nominations lodged before 1 July 2024.
This adjustment aligns with the Government’s commitment made during the Jobs and Skills Summit in September 2022. Further details regarding future income thresholds and the indexation methodology, including information on the new Skills in Demand Visa, will be provided later in 2024. Employers nominating workers for subclass 482, 494, 186, and 187 visas must adhere to specific requirements. For overseas workers with an annual salary under AUD 250,000, employers must ensure that:
These requirements help to prevent overseas workers from being paid less than Australian workers for the same work and protect the Australian labor market from being undercut by these visa programs.
The TSMIT for nomination applications is as follows:
The TSMIT does not include non-monetary benefits such as accommodation or a car, which must be provided in addition to the TSMIT. Employers are required to ensure that the AMSR and the worker’s guaranteed annual earnings meet or exceed the TSMIT applicable at the time of lodgement.
The AMSR is determined by evaluating what an equivalent Australian worker is paid, considering enterprise agreements, industrial awards, job outlook information, recent job advertisements, and remuneration surveys or advice from unions or employer associations.
Employers must ensure that the salary offered to the nominated overseas worker is not lower than that of an equivalent Australian worker. Nominations will be refused if the proposed salary is less than the AMSR or if only generic market salary data or surveys are provided.
