This visa is awarded to overseas guardians of students under the age of 18 coming to study in Australia on a student visa.

Visa Requirements

You must be at least 21 years of age.

You must be the parent and have legal custody of the holder of the student visa. Or you must be a relative who is nominated by the parent.

You must have no dependent family members younger than six years of age. If this is the case, the dependent(s) may travel with you if you can demonstrate compelling and compassionate evidence as to why they should be allowed to accompany you to Australia.

You must have adequate funds to cover all expenses involved in both your and the holder of the student visa’s stay in Australia.

You must be able to provide accommodation, support and general welfare to the holder of the student visa throughout their stay.

You must have Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) for you and any dependents travelling with you to Australia.

You must intend to stay in Australia only for the duration of your visa.

You must meet the specified health and character requirements.

Benefits of this Visa

You may stay in Australia until the holder of the student visa completes their course of study, or until they turn 18, whichever happens first.

You may study an ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students) course for up to 20 hours per week.

You may study a non-ELICOS course for up to three months.

You may bring dependent children under the age of six. As long as they meet the specified requirements detailed above.

Visa Restrictions

You may not work.

This visa is not a qualifying visa. You may not apply for another visa while you are in Australia on a visa subclass 590.

Only one student guardian visa is permitted per student visa.

If you bring a dependent child less than six years of age to Australia you may not leave Australia without them.

This visa may be granted to guardians of student visa holders over the age of 18 in the case that the student has specific needs and care requirements due to exceptional circumstances.

Visa Assessment Levels

Different applications will be subject to different levels of assessment. The level of assessment is dependent on two factors. 1) The passport of the applicant and 2) The education provider they are registered to study with.

Assessment levels are graded from one to three.

Level one is the lowest level of assessment. Level three is the highest. These levels are determined in terms of the risk of the applicant breaking the terms of their visa.

As such, level three applicants will need to provide more definite proof of the claims made in their application in regards to such matters as finances, educational background etc.

Applicants for the subclass 590 visa will receive the same risk rating as the student they are applying with.
