New Core Skills Occupation List: Targeting the Skills Australia Needs

HOme > Skill Assessment FAQs for Different Skill Assessment Authorities

Australia’s immigration landscape is undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). This change is part of the government’s commitment to modernize the temporary skilled visa program by replacing outdated and rigid occupation lists. The CSOL is designed to better align with Australia’s current and future workforce requirements, providing a clear pathway for skilled migrants to contribute to the nation’s economy.

The CSOL is a single, consolidated list comprising 456 occupations deemed critical to addressing skills shortages across various industries. This new list has been developed through rigorous labour market analysis and extensive stakeholder consultations conducted by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA).

Replacing the complex and fragmented occupation lists previously in use, the CSOL is designed to provide greater flexibility and clarity for both employers and skilled migrants. It simplifies access to the temporary skilled migration program, ensuring that Australia’s workforce remains competitive and capable of meeting evolving industry needs.

The CSOL will play a pivotal role in two major visa programs set to launch on 7 December 2024:

  1. Skills in Demand Visa
  • This new visa will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa.
  • The Core Skills stream of this visa will use the CSOL to prioritize occupations that are essential for Australia’s economic growth and sustainability.

2. Permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) Visa

  • The Direct Entry stream under this visa will also adopt the CSOL.
  • It provides a pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers in critical occupations, addressing long-term workforce needs.

The streamlined approach of the CSOL benefits both employers and skilled workers:

  • For Employers:
    • Easier access to skilled workers in high-demand roles.
    • Simplified hiring processes through a consolidated and clear occupation list.

  • For Skilled Migrants:
    • A more transparent migration process with clear guidelines on eligible occupations.
    • Greater opportunities for temporary and permanent residency in Australia.
The Skills in Demand visa is just one part of the broader immigration reforms coming into effect on 7 December 2024. Another notable change is the introduction of the National Innovation visa, which aims to attract global talent in emerging sectors. Detailed announcements about these reforms will be made soon, signaling Australia’s focus on innovation and addressing long-term skills shortages.

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) represents a major leap forward in addressing Australia’s workforce challenges. By streamlining skilled migration pathways and prioritising essential occupations, the CSOL ensures that Australia remains competitive and ready for future economic demands.
