Ministerial Direction 111: What It Means for Student Visa Processing in Australia

HOme > Ministerial Direction 111: What It Means for Student Visa Processing in Australia

On 19 December 2024, the Australian Government introduced Ministerial Direction 111 (MD111), a new policy aimed at improving the processing of offshore Student Visa (Subclass 500) applications. This directive replaces the previous Ministerial Direction 107 and outlines the priority order for student visa applications.

What is Ministerial Direction 111?

MD111 sets new processing priorities for student visa applications lodged from outside Australia. The direction aims to ensure that genuine students are given priority while reducing the backlog of applications.

Priority Order Under MD111:

  • Applications from Higher Education students
  • Applications for Postgraduate Research programs
  • Applications from Vocational Education and Training (VET) students
  • Applications for Independent English Language Intensive Courses (ELICOS)

What This Means for Students

While the new policy is expected to improve processing times for genuine students, applicants must submit complete applications with all required documents to avoid delays. The introduction of MD111 is part of the broader Migration Strategy aimed at strengthening the integrity of Australia’s international education sector.
