The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is an important post-study program of the international students in Australia which enables them to remain, work and gather experience towards the permanent residency (PR). This visa will be offered in 2025 with revised English requirements and fees in two major streams: Post-Study Work (post-higher education degrees) and Graduate Work (vocational skills). It has 2 to 4 years of stay, according to qualification, and regional studies allowed. Eligibility Requirements
In order to be eligible, you must be under the age of 50 (but it drops to 35 in certain streams since July 2024 changes). Be in possession of an Australian qualification subject to registration by CRICOS, which has been achieved within a minimum of two years of study. In post-study work, it is degree-based; it is not less than a bachelor’s (2 years), not more than a master’s (3 years), or a PhD (4 years), and may include 2 additional years of regional study.
Graduate Work Graduate occupations must be listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) with a positive skills assessment. The application must be made within 6 months of the course completion, and competent English is demonstrated through tests such as IELTS 6.0 overall (valid for 1 year; Overseas Student Results accepted from August 2025). You must include a statement from a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) of how you are going to use what you study.
Personal Documents and Identity
- Legal passport (biographical pages).
- Passport photo (new, 45mm x 35mm).
- Birth certificate (complete, with English translation (where necessary)).
- Name change certificates (marriage/divorce certificates).
- Past Australian visa grant notices.

Research and Competency Evidence
- Formal award certificate and full transcript (in dates and completion).
- Full course confirmation of enrollment (CoE).
- Documentation of 16+ months of study in Australia (e.g. enrolment letters).
- Post-Vocational stream: Skills assessment (e.g. VETASSESS, valid 3 years)
English Speaking and Medical/Character Tests
The test in English is also obligatory: one may choose IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, or Cambridge (one-year validity). To stay healthy, get full check-ups with a Bupa panel physician (have to get a HAP ID initially). The police clearances required include character: Australian Federal Police (AFP) check in Australia and certificates in any country you have lived in for at least 12 months since you were 16 years of age (last 12 months). Application Forms, Fees, and Inclusions of Family
Lodge Form 485 online. The minimum payment is AUD 2,235 (it will be raised in July 2025), with AUD 1,150 paid by adult dependents and AUD 560 paid by children. In the case of family members, add their passports, birth/marriage certificates, photos, health/character checks, and Form 1229 consent in the case of a non-sponsoring parent. All documents should be colour scanned; translations that are non-English should be translated using NAATI-approved translations only.
