Australia Revises Graduate Work Visa Study Regulations

The visa has two major routes. The Post-Study Work stream applies to university graduates. When completing a Bachelor degree, you are allowed to remain two years. A Master by course work allows three years and a Master research or PhD allows four years. In case you were studying in regional locations, you earn bonus time: an additional year on places such as Perth or Gold Coast, two additional years in places such as Adelaide or Hobart, and up to three additional years in remote locations.

The other is referred to as Graduate Work and is used by the students with trade or diploma qualifications. Skills check You must have a skills check to demonstrate that your job is on the list of required jobs in the government, such as plumbing or nursing.

There is still a need in English skills. Your total score on the IELTS test should be 6.0, or equivalent on other test options that have been approved such as PTE or TOEFL. You have to be less than one year when you are applying. Since August 2025, your student visa English test results are also acceptable.

There are students who are given special treatment. In case the course was paid by the Australian Defence Force or you have a disability that complicated your study, you may not require taking the two years, but you need to justify it with documents.

You are not eligible to apply when you completed your course more than six months ago, and your qualification is below diploma. Combination courses such as a diploma and a degree are all right provided that they cannot be counted twice.

These regulations follow a large-scale review of migration in 2023. Australia has recently received more than 700,000 international students and the government does not want to leave the graduate visa allowing people to stay longer without the required skills but rather work in real jobs instead of creating a vacancy.

According to a spokesperson of the Home Affairs, they are seeking graduates that have studied and worked here, who can make contributions immediately.

But not everyone is happy. Universities Australia argues that the tough regulations may act as a deterrent to the best students particularly in urban areas. A spokesperson said that regional areas can upsurge whereas the Sydney and Melbourne campuses have the potential to lose numbers.

Migration agents are instructing the students to plan early. 

A bridging visa will allow you to remain legally pending. Others spend the time to acquire working experience and seek permanent visas subsequently.

The graduate visa is one of the essential activities of skilled youths, with the total migration limit in Australia having been established at 185,000 yearly. But the point is made, work hard, get the regulations and your Australian stay can continue.
