HOme > Australia Introduces Skills in Demand Visa (SID) to Address Workforce Shortages
Australia has taken a significant step to address ongoing workforce shortages with the launch of the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482), replacing the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa on 7 December 2024. This new visa is designed to provide skilled workers with a streamlined pathway to both temporary employment and permanent residency, while ensuring that critical labour market gaps are filled across various sectors.
The SID visa is part of the Australian Government’s Migration Strategy to attract highly skilled workers in sectors experiencing long-term shortages. The visa is expected to simplify the migration process, offering a more transparent and flexible approach for both employers and applicants.
Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): The updated list includes 456 occupations, with 70 new occupations added, such as cybersecurity specialists, aged care workers, and renewable energy engineers.
The SID visa aims to address ongoing labour shortages while ensuring that the migration system aligns with Australia’s long-term economic and social priorities. It also simplifies the visa process by reducing bureaucracy and offering clearer pathways for both workers and employers.
